Naming the Ethical Controls

As well as their intrinsic controls, all Domains are subject to ethical controls, which are located in two tertiary hierarchies found in the 6th Level of two of the Domain Typologies.

Taxonomic Controls

Man is evidently a moral being in two senses because each of us must function both as:

• a member of society
and as
• a member of the human race.

It is therefore not surprising that two distinct sets of ethical controls exist within the Taxonomy.

  • The ethical controls for preserving/benefiting society are found within the Purpose Domain (RL6).
  • The ethical controls for preserving/benefiting humanity are found within the Root Domain (RH).

The naming of Trees in these two Ethical Control Complexes has been investigated. It seemed natural to conceptualize these with the convention used for the Domain Fundamentals triplet, but with the prefix Ethical insteal of "Primal". The two sets can then be differentiated using a further adjunctive term:  Societal or Humanity's.

The Originating Tree is the Ethical Vehicle.
The Structural Hierarchy is the Ethical Effect.
The Final Tree is the Ethical Field.

Controls for Society

Ethical Rules (PH"6) is the Tertiary Hierarchy within the Purpose Domain (see Ch.8 of Working with Values). While the structural hierarchy had been investigated (see Ch.9), the originating and final Trees had not been developed in the text or posted on the website.

During this investigation, I developed those Trees and uncovered various logical errors in naming the Groupings. Names were then assigned in line with current thinking. Posting will occur when time allows.

It is possible to conceptualize these with the convention used for other triplets, but with the adjunct "Societal" as explained above.

Inspection and analysis of the various entities suggested the following names:

Society's ethical vehicle is An Upright Citizen (PH"6K) who functions in accord with society's ethical rules within A Stable Society (PsH"6K) which is the ethical field. In doing so, the Upright Citizen-PH"6K is focused on Accommodating Authorities (PsH"6), which is the ethical effect.

Controls for Humanity

Primal Injunctions (RH") is the Tertiary Hierarchy within the Root Domain. The two Trees and structural hierarchy were developed and posted within the Your Better Self satellite.

It is possible to conceptualize these frameworks as explained above using the adjunct Humanity's:

The Primal Injunctions Tree, RH"K, is Humanity's Ethical Vehicle.
The Structural Hierarchy, RsH" is Humanity's Ethical Effect
The Final Tree, RsH"K is Humanity's Ethical Vehicle.

All previous names and dualities were reviewed as part of this study. In the event, the changes were rather minor and the current position is shown here:

Humanity's ethical vehicle is Communal Betterment (RH"6K) which requires a person to function in accord with the Primal Injunctions and operate within humanity's ethical field of Personal Betterment (RsH"6K. In doing so, Communal Betterment is focused on Generating Goodness (RsH"), which is the ethical effect.
